Emily
There is a painting known as Emily. It is a heartwarming painting and has been displayed in many famous art exhibitions all around the world. Yet, no one could trace the origins of this painting. No one knows the story be behind Emily. Except me. And I am about to tell you this secret.
Paul stared at his painting for while. It was a rather decent painting of a cottage with a yard full of flowers and an oak tree by the side. There was a little girl playing with a bright pink ball at the centre of the painting. He decided that this was as good as it can get. Putting his palette and brushes down, he prepared to make do the final touches. He held up a blade of grass, a tulip, a daisy, a piece of bark from an old oak tree and a strand of hair from the little. “Painta Liva,” he uttered, casting a spell on the painting. At once the items he held disappeared and painting sprung to live. The grass grew wild and became less symmetrical. Tulips bathed in the warm, lovely sunlight and daisies danced to the passing wind. The oak tree stood at the corner, watching over the whole garden. The little girl was full of joy, and held the ball out as if she was passing it to someone. Paul smiled as he noticed details that even the best photographs could not capture.
“It’s missing something, don’t you think so?”
Paul turned around. It was the love of his life, Lydia. His heart started racing and his throat became dry.
“I… she… her… It’s called Emily.”
It was a great chance to tell her about the painting, his feelings, the loneliness and the love he felt for her. Yet, that was all he managed to squeeze out of his dying throat.
“Emily’s so lonely! Give her someone to play with.”
“That is what I’m trying to portray,” Paul imagined himself saying that, but couldn’t find the courage.
“Anyway I have to go. I still have lessons,” Lydia picked up her notes from the table and made her way out of the room.
“Ly… Lydia?” he could barely breathe. “Are you free this evening?”
“Nope, guess what? I’m going on a date! Remember Parker? He asked me out! He’s so… …”
Lydia went on talking, but Paul wasn’t listening. All his plans, the dinner, the romantic confession, were going down the drain. Then the school bell rung, rudely interrupting Lydia’s monologue.
“I have to go.”
She left the room, but Paul didn’t even notice.
Later that day, as Paul watched helplessly from his office as Lydia boarded Parkers car and went off to the date she had been looking forward to. His phone rang. It was from the Ministry of Peace headquarters. Paul belonged to a very special department known as Magic and other Unexplained Forces. The department job is to keep the existence of Magic users a secret from the general public. Its aim was to maintain peace between the public and the Magicians. Lydia was suspected to be a Magician working with special powers. However, she didn’t even believe that Magic existed. She might suddenly lose control of her power. It was Paul’s job to stop her and report to the headquarters.
“Hello?”
“Yes?” Paul mumbled halfheartedly, recognizing the voice of Merlin, the head Magician in their department.
“Your mission is over. Cut all ties and return to the headquarters as soon as possible.”
“Why?”
“We’re annihilating Lydia. The headquarters have decided that she is too dangerous. The assassins are on their way.”
“What!”
Paul dropped his phone in shock. Lydia, his Lydia, was going to be killed. He started panicking. He must go after her. He must protect her.
“Paul?”
Paul looked up. It was Lydia.
“I came back for something,” Lydia explained as she made her way to her desk hurriedly, “I can’t believe I’m so careless on my first date. Parker’s waiting for me.”
This was his chance. Nothing is going to get in his way now. Paul marched over and grabbed Lydia’s arm.
“Come with me.”
“Paul? What are you doing? Parker’s waiting…”
Before she could complete her sentence, Paul had already hauled her halfway across the school. They came to stop in the art room, where Emily stood in the corner.
“Paul! What’s going on?”
“Shhh!” he stained his ears as he swore he heard the footsteps of the assassins. “You wouldn’t believe me even if I told you.”
“Paul! What’s wrong with you? You’re just trying to ruin my date aren’t you?”
Lydia tried to struggle free. Paul held on to her and locked the door.
“Keep quiet! Don’t move!”
He was sure that the assassins were closing in now. Lydia suddenly started screaming for help.
“Shh! Shh!”
Somehow Lydia managed to break free and made a dash towards the door again. From that moment onwards everything happened so fast Paul had no idea what was going on. All he knew was that Lydia was tearing towards her own grave and he had to stop her. By the time he came to his senses, he was holding a brick and Lydia laid unconscious, but still alive, in her own pool of blood.
“No, no, no…”
Paul fell onto his knees, overwhelmed by what just happened. Then he heard a knock on the door.
“Is anyone inside?”
Paul recognized that voice. It was Merlin. Fear took over him. He frantically thought back on all the spells he knew. But none of the spell could guarantee Lydia’s safety, even at the expense of his own life. Merlin began casting a spell to unlock the door. Paul looked desperately around the room for any hope of escape. Emily still stood at the corner of the room. Her happy, yet lonely smile was freaking him out; her eyes seemed to stare through his soul, begging for a companion. Suddenly it hit him. Of course there was a spell that could not be broken. A spell created by him. Paul picked Lydia up.
“I’m so sorry. It never meant to end up like this.”
Paul took a deep breath, and casted his final spell.
“Painta Liva!”

Bus Stop
Then he left as he saw his bus arrive. The little girl turned back, and saw the black man board the bus to pay the driver. Then, he got down and started to walk towards the back door, but the bus drove away before he could do so. Disappointed, the black man opened his sack to check if he had any money left. Seeing nothing inside, he started his long walk home. No one stepped forward to help him.
Another bus arrived, and the little girl saw a black man inside the bus refuse to stand up to give his seat to a white. The white man grabbed him by the collar, punched him, and, with the help of another white, threw the black man out of the bus. The black man placed his hand on his forehead to wipe away the blood, and sat at the side of the road, waiting for another bus to come. No one stepped forward to help him.
The girl stood in the rain for another few minutes, when she saw a white reaching out to take a sack of money from the black. His excuse was that blacks could not be trusted with money. For a second there was hesitation in the blacks eyes, but soon rage took over and he shouted at the white. At once, policemen were upon the black and they chased him down the street. No one stepped forward to help him.
Turning her head, the girl saw signs, many signs. Some said, “NO BLACKS”, while others read, “WHITES ONLY”. A black tried to enter one of those restaurants, and was immediately thrown out and punished. No one stepped forward to help him.
As she stood at the bus stop, many such images flashed pass and she wondered what they meant.

A Diary
24th March
I don’t like changes. Even though I know no matter what you do, there will be changes and most of the changes will not be undone, but I still don’t like them. For one, this is the first diary I’ve even had. I never thought I would have a diary, but so many things happened recently and I don’t know what I can do. My parents divorced and we moved house and stuff like that. The house is big and white and clean and neat and... I don’t know it doesn’t matter. But it does have a great view of the sea and the breeze is really nice. Anyway, I’m staying with my mom now, but apparently my dad’s pretty upset about it. Mom said that maybe I’ll have to move to stay with him, I don’t know. All I know is that I don’t want to. Guess too much changes occurring at the same time can make me freak out.
26th March
Went to school today, and I must confess I felt out of place. People just ignore me and do their own stuff. While I was introducing myself I saw this girl, she was ugly looked pretty upset. I thought she had no friends, but to my surprise, she did. But her friends doesn’t seem to notice that she’s upset. Perhaps I’m being over sensitive? At that moment I I thought to myself, if a girl like her has friends... I don’t know, there’s so much stuff happening recently I really don’t know.
28th March
Mom’s shouting on the phone, apparently dad called and they’re arguing. No friends at school yet, I just get ignored.
2nd April
I saw that ugly girl from my class this afternoon. She was standing near the cliff by the beach, and I thought she was going to commit suicide. I just stood there for god know how long staring at her in case she did. Then she just turned and left. Sometimes people do funny things.
5th April
She’s there again, at the cliff by the beach. After I saw her I went back in, and when I checked again in the late evening, she was gone.
10th April
More stuff happened. One night dad came, and I thought I could talk to him and do stuff I did before the whole divorce thing, but they started arguing again, the way they did before they divorced. Guess it never really changed anything. I locked myself in my room and... I don’t know just do stuff and ignore the world the way they ignore me. I wonder if my parents ever thought how all these stuff affects me. Perhaps they’re too busy... too busy arguing with each other and not noticing that they’re not getting anywhere.
11th April
She’s there again, I wonder what she’s doing?
12th April
I saw her again, and this time I went out to check. I hid myself, quite far away. She seems to be talking to someone, but there’s no one there. Maybe she’s talking to herself? I don’t know. Before I could find out anything else she just left.
14th April
I saw her again, and I went down. I got closer and she was talking to herself. She said stuff about getting ignored, not fitting in and things like that. Guess she’s lonely eh?
16th April
I can’t believe what happened today. I was, or so I thought, pretty well hidden while I listened to her talk (and I still don’t know why I did that) then suddenly, she just turned and, as if she knew I was there, stare straight into my eyes. I freaked out and I ran, i think I heard her call me, but I just couldn’t stop until I’m back in my room. I don’t want to go to school tomorrow.
31st October
Guess I managed to befriend that girl, and guess I didn’t need this diary for a long time, but more changes are about to come. Seems like I’m going to stay with my dad... after not meeting him for so long it just feels so wrong... but there’s not much I can do. Perhaps I’ll find myself another friend?

Mouseferatu 9vampire mouse)
“Black Widow, there have been reports of a vampire mouse terrorising this area,” a bionic mouse whispered to the police.
“Don’t be silly, vampires can’t survive here – they need special cheese,” the black widow mouse chuckled.
“They say it sucks the blood of other mice and kills them. And black widow mice seem to be its favourite.”
****
Black Widow sets out in search of the vampire mouse seen around that area. She travelled around for a while then stops and rest on a tree at the harbour, near to the kingdom. It was a good spot where many mice pass by. At least I can see the sun rise if nothing exciting happens, she thought. Below her, many mice passed by, and several hunters came to set their trap, but nothing extraordinary seems to happen. After a long wait, she decided that the vampire’s not going to appear. That was when it emerged.
It was a small mouse, so small she didn’t realise its existence even when it dropped onto her branch. It made such small movements Black Widow thought it was the wind. It was not until the tiny mice lunged at her when she noticed it. Despite being surprised, Black Widow managed to dodge the attack. Doing so, she fell off the branch and landed on the ground. Ignoring the bruises she had, she darted into the bush. The vampire mouse dropped from the branch and advanced towards her. Black Widow ran a short distance, then suddenly turned and struck the vampire with her paws and fangs. She jumped back when she felt that she bit into something cold. At that very moment the vampire swiped at her with its paw. She landed nearly a metre away. The vampire sprinted towards her, and she barely had the time to stand up before the mouse reached her. She turned and knocked the tiny mouse aside.
After that it was all claws, teeth and blood. The vampire mouse, small and agile, dodged Black Widow’s attacks, but Black Widow was experienced and with every strike she got closer to reading its movement. The vampire mouse sensed this, and tried not to move in a fixed pattern, but alas, it was young and inexperienced.
Just as the sun was about to rise, Black Widow’s deadly claw struck the vampire mouse, knocking it into a tree. At once Black Widow was upon the stunned mouse; tearing at it with her claws and biting it as if it was a piece of Super Brie. Now the young mouse was pinned under Black Widow’s claws and unable to move.
Just before the final blow, the vampire mouse gasped, “I’m too young to die. Spare me.”
Black Widow hesitated. She had been so caught up with fighting she didn’t notice that the mouse was only a tiny newborn. Without parents, the mouse was probably defenceless before it became a vampire. It is so young it probably doesn’t know what’s wrong and what’s right, thought Black Widow.
“Never, I repeat, never step a foot near the kingdom ever. Go to the place where vampires dwell, return to where your ancestors came from, understand?”
“Yes,” the tiny mouse was struggle for its breath.
Black Widow released her grip. She stared at the mouse for a long time, and then she turned and prepared to leave. That was when she felt a piercing pain on her neck.
That night, Gwania lost their most trusty policemice.
****
“You want power?” quizzed a vampire mouse.
“Y... ... yesz,” the baby white mice replied, it was small and weak, shivering continuously and thin enough for you to see its ribs.
“Why?”
“Revenge... ... to slay those that took my family away from me,” hissed the tiny white mice. From the small and weak figure, she suddenly grew to be so strong, her eyes were red with anger, her body tensed and ready to strike, her teeth showing and her tail lashing out at the shadows behind her.

The Devil within Me
At the very moment I stared at the computer, I felt my fingers twitched. Then I turned away and reached out for a book beside it. A tiny pang of joy shot through me as I know that I had succeeded, that I had conquered the worst enemy anyone can face – myself.
Everything started at the start of the year, when my antique computer was replaced by a new one, which my parents bought for me because of my good results the year before. I began to realise what the computer can actually do. I was able to play the games I couldn’t because my previous computer wasn’t powerful enough, but now, no one could name a game my computer couldn’t support. It wasn’t long before I became addicted to computer games. It wasn’t that obvious at the beginning because I only spent one to two hours a day in front of the computer, but gradually, it grew to be six or seven hours as the urge to play grew continuously. I was soon taking over my friends in both the number of hours spent playing per day and the amount of homework that was left undone. However, there were only a limited number of hours a normal person have in a day, so I began to sleep lesser and lesser. Bed time was ten, but, because of my computer addiction, it became later than three. My parents knew nothing about all these because I would pretend to fall asleep first, and then lock the door and before returning to my virtual world.
Despite the fact that I just barely passed the first exam that year, I did not put more effort in studying. The exam which determined whether one could advance to secondary two had passed, and I failed four out of six subjects, and getting a mere pass for the remaining two. When my parents questioned why my results were so bad, I lied and told them that I was feeling unwell during the examination period, and they believed me. I felt bad for lying to them, and there was only one way to redeem myself – to get good results for the retest, that took place two month later. That was when I told myself I had to get rid of the devil that was riding me.
Sometimes I wished that they knew the truth because they would make it a lot easier for me to kick my bad habit. My first attempt to do so was a failure. I tried to force myself to study, but, being under the same roof as the computer, I ended up playing computer games. Then some of my friends suggested that I try not to stay at home. I thought it was a good idea so I tried it, and it worked. After school I would go to the library to study, or play some sports with my friends. The effect wasn’t immediate, I still play the computer every day, but I began to spend less time playing and more time studying and sleeping. There was a period of time I gave up and returned to playing more than seven hours of computer games per day, but with so many friends caring about me and reminding me what was more important, I did it.
I used to wonder why people fought so hard for freedom, but have I dreamt that I would be one of them. I have fought hard with the devil riding me. Now I can stand in front of the computer and tell myself that, no, I’m not going to play the computer. I can study in front of the computer without getting distracted, so I proudly claim that I have won the battle with that devil and that I am free.
As I looked at the look I held in my hand, I realised that it used to be one of my favourite books. I flipped through it, and then slammed it closed. A short while later, my brother saw my dragging a huge box of books into the storeroom and locking it. “What... ... what are you doing?” he quizzed. “Oh, nothing much,” I replied, “just treasuring the freedom I fought so hard for.” My brother gave me a bewildered look, but I ignored it and returned to my room.

Left to Die
After waiting for a long time, a young dog, who had been studying his surroundings for a long time, emerged from behind a pile of rubbish. He trotted down one of the streets, then nosed the next rubbish dump he saw. Nothing, not even a scrap. There were scents of other tramps. They had been here, taking food from his territory. As the days grew warmer and more humid, food went stale easily and became scare. He growled, but could not do anything about it. They were gone now, and he didn’t have the time to track them down. Even if he did, he would not be able to chase them off. He was too weak.
A few months ago, he had been bought by his owner, who took good care of him. He was one pampered puppy for a while, but as time passes, his owner grew tired of taking care of him, and he was neglected. Now, left on the streets to left to fight for his own survival. He wondered what his name was. He knew he had been wondering about that for a long time. Every day since his owner abandoned him he would wonder. Who am I? He kept asking himself, but the answer never came.
Tired and hungry, Dog traveled through the neighborhood, poking each and every rubbish dump with his snout. He found this piece of meat in one of the dumps, but it smelt so bad even the ravens and crows left it there. There were a few morsels of food left in a can, and he stuck his paw into the can, trying to wrench the food out. In the process, he cut his paw against the sharp edge of the can. Yowling in pain, he pulled his paw out and the can went flying across the floor.
When he finished patrolling his territory, he limped into an unknown territory, and found this house which smelt of wonderful things. Steak, lamb, chicken, everything and anything he could ever imagined. Alas, he came late and the garbage was gone. With his paw stinging and stomach growling, he made himself as comfortable as he could in a box near the house and waited for morning to come.
When morning came, the house remained quiet But Dog knew better than to give up now. He continued to wait. Afternoon soon followed and the heat became near unbearable People began entering the house, and the aroma was stronger than ever. There were so many different smells it made his stomach growl louder than ever and he head spun. By now many other dogs have gathered.
When the first rubbish was thrown there was chaos. Hungry dogs dashed forward, snatching whatever they could. Small, weak and injured, Dog had no chance to get past those hungry and wild brutes to get the food. Then a truck stopped just outside the house. A human came out and opened the back of the truck. It was full of frozen meat. Frozen meat was hard, Dog knew, but if you left it in the sun it would become tender and delicious. Non of the other dogs attempted to snatch the meat from the humans. No one dared for it was a serious crime. Dog, too, knew that, but his stomach growled so loud he could not hear himself think.
He waited for his chance, then dashed forward. That was when time seemed to slow down. Dog ran fast, faster than he ever did, and ever would, in his life. The human holding the meat widened his eyes and tried to dodge the attack from Dog. The human dropped the meat he was holding and rolled aside. Dog must have looked ferocious when he ripped the packaging of the meat apart and took one for himself. He heard the humans yelling at him as he took off with the meat. He ran again, he ran towards the road and meant to dash across when he saw a car coming. He glanced behind him and saw the furious faces of the humans he had stolen from. Heart pumping fast, Dog dashed across the road.
He felt something hit him. For a moment he felt pain shooting through his body.
He felt totally at peace. His hunger was gone now, he felt nothing from his paw. He could think straight. He asked himself. He recalled the various delicious things he was fed, he recollected the times when his stomach was never empty, his mouth never dry, his coat was always groomed, he remembered the time when he was loved. Although they were all gone now, he knew he would never forget them. Then it came to him, like magic, his name.
He let go of the meat he had been holding in his jaws.
A young lady laid on her bed, wondering what her dog was doing now. She saw his longing eyes that day, the eyes which told her that her dog did not want to remain trapped in the house. So she let him out. She thought he would come back. She thought dogs knew how to go home by themselves. But her dog never returned. He must have hated this place, she thought, and wondered what she did wrong. Then she heard a car screech.

Hunter
A wolf was running through the forest. It sped past the hunter at lightning speed. For a moment, the hunter was dazed. Then, he raised his gun and aimed. The first shot missed, and the wolf continued running, trying its best to escape from the hunter. The hunter sprinted to another location, where he could easily spot the wolf. The hunter raised his gun again. He waited. There was no movement. He waited some more. Hunting was a game of patience. The bushes rustled, and the hunter aimed at it. He did not fire, for he didn’t know whether it was the wolf or not. He continued waiting. In less than a split second the wolf pounced out from the bush and hurried away from the hunter. The hunter kept calm. He aimed, and fired a shot. One bullet, straight through the pelt.
The wolf fell.

Night
Shira was still in her classroom at seven in the evening. She hid her bag under the teacher’s table, so it was impossible for any one to spot it outside. Then, carefully, she lifted her head and peeked out of the window. No one, they did not know that she was still in school. She stood up exited the classroom. Cautiously, she ran across the fourth level, past the music rooms to a secluded corner which no one visited. There, she stayed until everyone left the school. The security guard closed and gate and returned home. Quietly, after a long time, she stood up and stretched. She looked at her watch, and hurried towards the side of the field. There, she would meet her friends. No, they were not humans. It would be too obvious for so many people to hide in school. They were creature, awesome creatures that only appeared at night.
Gradually, the creatures appeared. They were magnificent creatures. Some took the forms of creatures that existed on Earth, like wolves, tigers and lions, others, who are more abstract, took the forms of imaginary ones, not only unicorns or dragons, but also creatures that no one ever thought of. Spirits, she would have called them, but those creatures called themselves Shadows. She met those creatures for the first time a week ago, when she stayed back in school to see what the school looked like under the moonlight. Ever since that night she would stay back to peek at the Shadows.
Shira laid down on her stomach and raised her head and counted the number of Shadows that night. One, two, three, four… … there were only thirteen Shadows. Just a week ago there had been more than fifty of them. Without making any obvious movements, Shira laid down again. The Shadows were talking.
“Where are the rest?” one of them asked.
“Gone. They sensed human presence nearby and didn’t want to be caught.”
Shira froze. Was it her presence that they sensed.
“Wimps.”
“Clever, I would say. If I’m younger I would have gone too, but I can’t now, being so old.”
“Quiet! I hear something!”
Shira couldn’t see, but she swore she felt the Shadow’s eyes staring in her direction. For what seemed like a thousand years, Shira waited. But there was no sound. Slowly, she peeked at the field. The Shadows were gone, because a security guard was patrolling with his torch.

Frost
The sky darkened and it began to rain. Icy cold droplets of water pelted on the old man’s shoulders and drenched his clothes. With every strike, the old man slowed down, but there was no one around to see the fatigue in his eyes. The rain never seemed to become smaller. For a moment the old man saw stars, then the next thing he knew he was on the grounds, panting breathlessly.
From far he saw a beautiful sports car approaching. He raised his hand and waved to get the driver’s attention. But the car just sped past, splashing mud on the old man. He sat up and leaned against the lamp post nearby. Across the street, he saw a little girl point to him. Perhaps help was on its way, he thought. But the girl’s mother held the little girl by her hand and pulled her into the building. “Ah, innocent little angel, the world is tinted and it wouldn’t be long before you, the purest of all things, become tinted too,” he said to the girl, but no one heard him. No one paid attention to what an insignificant man had said, for he was not a politician. They would not gain anything from listening to him.
“Perhaps you can slow down to help me?” he said to everyone that passed by, but, again, no one cared.
He sat there for a long time, wondering what would happen in the future. With every passing second, the rain seemed to get colder. When he was a little boy, he would just need to cry and someone would take him by his hand and lead him to the police station, where he would be brought home. But now age had caught up with him, and tears could not come out. Even if they did, no one would respond.
He laughed while panting and wanted to say, “I think the world just got colder,” but no words came out.

Lucifer, a rewrite of "Kiba"
I picked up the pen and froze for several minutes. Then I stood up, staring at the view beyond the window. I not know what to write. The mental block was there again. It was an annoying condition that visits me every now and then. In frustration, I hurled the pen across the room. Then I heard something – a clear, loud, bay. I picked up the pen, and a long forgotten tale unfolded on the paper… …
I was heading home that day, with a particularly heavy heart. I failed another test when most of my classmates got nearly perfect scores. I was reluctant to go home. I could already hear my mother’s voice, one that was scolding me for not doing well enough. I had been an obedient child. I did study, but it’s just that I didn’t do well. My parents will never understand that. Sometimes, I too wonder why. But that was the truth, and nothing can change it.
To buy sometime, I went for a walk in the park. Unexpectedly, something caught my attention – a dog. Perhaps it was a wolf, since it looked very much like one, but I considered it a dog as no one on earth would expect to find a wolf in the middle of a well developed human civilization. When I took a closer look at the dog, I realized that its fur was really beautiful. Its fur was really white, and it glowed in an amazing way. When it gave a passing butterfly a friendly snap, it exposed its long, sharp fang. Considering its blood red eyes, it gave the impression of the devil, Lucifer. But the dog was friendly, and it came towards me so close I could read from the tag on its color “Lucifer, Male.” The playful dog nudged me with his nose, and soon after, we were having a lot of fun. Gradually, I realized that I had to head home, and so I left Lucifer staring at my disappearing figure.
Many times I returned to the park, and each time I found Lucifer waiting for me. It gradually became a habit, but it had a bad effect. With lesser time to study, my grades gradually began to drop. But I was happy, really happy.
Then one day, the happiness vanished.
I was on my way to the park, when a gang of bullies saw me and demanded for money. Unable to produce what they wanted, I was punished with kicks and punches. At that moment, I heard a familiar growl. I heard someone scream, heard the bullies’ footsteps and saw Lucifer chase after them. I began to lose conscious. I heard a car screech. Something collided with it.
I woke up in the hospital, with anxious faces around me. They told me that the bullies were chased by a policeman. They said the bullies nearly collided with the car. They said no one was hurt. I believe otherwise.
It started to rain.
Lucifer never returned to the park.

Departure
He was in the mountains, seeking solitude. The mountains were feared, and seldom disturbed. Many went in and never returned. But he was different. Unlike the others, he was not clumsy, and was far stronger than all of the villagers. For that reason he was never fully accepted into the society. For that reason he sought solitude in the mountains. He was challenging the mountains, daring them to consume him. He felt no fear, for he had nothing to lose. Perhaps if he returned from the mountains he would be regarded a hero, but the people were cruel. They do not accept those different from the majority.
In one hand he had a spear, in the other, he held a torch. He brought neither food nor water with him, the reason was unknown. He made his way through the mountains, and arrived at a stream. It was tiny, but vital. All great rivers start out as small streams, just like humans. Every warrior starts off as a baby, gradually growing. Without that stream, a river would shrink. Every tiny thing was important. There was little vegetation around the stream, and it enhanced how lonely the puny stream was. No animals were visiting, no bugs, and no reptiles. He wanted to accompany the stream to the place where it would no longer be isolated.
So he set off again, walking along the stream. Gradually it grew, it became wider, deeper. Its pace became faster, and he was no longer able to keep up with it. The water ran, throwing itself forward, away from the lonely place. It arrived at its destination. And so the water leaves its source eagerly, like a bird leaving for south, but never to return.
He was like the water, leaving his home to a place where seclusion was fantasy.

The Final War
There was a technology revolution thirty years back, and all sorts of mechanisms evolved at an unbelievable speed. It was so shocking at first no one could figure out how they should react. Then some countries started to have war. It soon became a world war. It was named “The Final War”, for many believed that mankind would not survive till after that war. People became beasts blinded by pride and power. Even countries that are small and powerless were dragged into the war. Larger countries thrived at first, concurring the other weaker countries the way we squash ants with our finger. But they did not remain thriving for long. Soon, there were only larger countries left, and they started killing each other. The blind beasts raged in war, killing more people than any other wars. It was truly a world war. Every single human was involved in it. New versions of nuclear bombs were dropped every other day. They killed more people, destroyed more buildings. Then someone decided that he had enough. He wanted all these to stop. He wanted control. He dropped the most powerful bomb ever created. It was said that you could see the earth shaking from a satellite. Countries began to yield. One by one they fall under the control of that man. He started brain washing the people and made them believe that things have always been the way they were now. His rule was similar to that of the king from the Qing Dynasty. But he stopped the war, and because of that, many people were willing to listen to him. those people were brained washed too. But they did so willingly. They… …
The rest of the diary was smudged with blood and could not be read. Stefen strained his eyes to decipher the distorted words, but he failed. The information provided from that old diary was more than enough to overwhelm him. Technology revolutions. World wars. Nuclear bombs. Brain wash. He never knew that the world was so advanced. But he was more curious than frightened.

Virus (Draft 2)
The city glowed as the sun shone its first few rays across the horizon. It glowed in a beautiful way, the kind that you see in photographs taken by famous photographers long ago. Although it was picturesque, there was no one enjoying it. As the sun rose, the streets remained empty. There was nearly no sign of life. A dead trees stood beside the streets, motionless and lifeless. But limp trees weren’t the only sign that things were dying. Limped stray dogs and cats were found on the streets, they too, were dead. When you see this scene, you would probably by wondering why these were happening. If you look close enough, you would see that in the crumbling buildings, chests of humans still heaved to provide oxygen for the body.
Stefen stared out of the window, not enjoying it’s beauty, but wishing that it was in the cyber-world, so that with one command, the streets would be cleaned up, and the trees would spring into life and green leaves would be providing shelter for the streets once again. Life was so much better in the cyber-world. One command, just one, would make the world perfect.
There were Computer Simulated Robots inside the cyber-world, but their intelligence level has been greatly reduced so that they do not over power real humans. “Life” has been perfect, until people started reporting that the system was infected by a virus, the only virus ever found in the cyber-world. Instead of giving it a name like what was done in the past, they just named it Virus, as simple as that.
Despite being only twenty-one, Stefen have a certain amount of knowledge when it comes to dealing with computer virus. Such people were really rare in those days, as it has been commonly believed that the cyber-world would not have viruses. Everyone with even the slightest knowledge of dealing with computer viruses has been employed by the company who was in charge of the whole cyber-world. Stefen held the position as the head of the section. He did not believe in Virus, thinking that the handful of people claiming that they, or rather, their machines, are lunatic. Despite that, he researched on the topic, since it brought a high income. Money in the cyber-world was used like those in the reality. .
After interviewing people who claimed that their machines are infected with Virus, Stefen found out that they were all very rich. All of them could not remember what happened, but they knew that it was something very terrible. Something so terrible that it would force the brain to choose between killing the person or to make him or her forgets everything. The brains decided to choose the latter. Soon after experiencing the effects of Virus, they would all commit suicide. You cannot die in the cyber-world, but can still die if you exit the cyber-world. Stefen has already decided that all those people infected with Virus were suffering from mental problems.
Instead of reporting his finding, he went on, researching on different types of viruses that existed in the past. It would allow him to earn an income and, at the same time, do something he actually had interest in. He tried as hard as possible to research on things more related to Virus, lest he finds out anything useful.
One mundane morning in his research lab, Stefen received a message sent by his subordinate that another person reported about having caught the virus, and he was a relatively poor person. Stefen went, rather eagerly, to have a talk with him. the only question in his mind as he approached the man’s house was whether he holds the key to the mystery.
As he reached the man’s house, he could hear him screaming, “NO! STOP IT! STOP IT! DON’T! ”
Such words were often heard from people who suffer from Virus. They would faint, then, after a while, regain conscious. After, they would not be able to remember anything.
Stefen sat down in front of the man, and waited for him to return to cyber-world. The man’s eyes opened slightly, then closed again.
“Light,” her murmured.
His murmur was followed by a long groan.
Instead of saying the usual things that normal patients would face, he said, “She knows, she knows.”
“Know what?” Stefen asked.
“She knows that I know. No, no, I shouldn’t say. She knows… … she knows… …”
And he lost conscious again. Suddenly Stefen understood that this wasn’t a mental problem. Virus was created by someone, and sent throughout the Internet to people he wanted to infect. This man knew who she was. Hence, he has to be eliminated. For a moment he felt very vulnerable. She knows that the man knew about her, and she killed him. She does not hesitate to kill. That night, when he slept, he could feel a difference, but he could not name it.
The world, it was crumbling. Toxic gas filled the air, deadly chemicals clogged the drains, the rivers, and the seas. The humans made a futile attempt to combat the problems they produced when they were young, but now they were all old, they could only do so little. As a result of the cyber-world, no one had any children. Stefen saw himself, old and weak, with on one to help him. A river was overflowing, and it was raining acid outside. His roof was dissolving in the toxic rain, and the flow of deadly chemicals was flowing nearer and nearer to his house. There was no where to hide, and no where to run.
Stefen woke up, screaming, “NO! STOP IT! STOP IT! DON’T! IT WON’T HAPPEN!”
Suddenly, he calmed down. No, no. It’s only a dream, it’s only a dream. You won’t forget it like the others. You won’t. You’re stronger than them, stronger… … He fainted.
The world is hopeless. It’s going to end exactly the way described in that dream. Earth will crumble, the human race would go extinct, and earth would then become another barren planet like the others.
He sat up, his hand placed on his forehead. It was hot. Tears rolled down his cheeks as he thought of how the world would end just like that. Then he noticed something different. He could remember. He could remember every single detail of the dream. He rolled our of bed, and was about to record his dream down when he saw a lady about his age, leaning against the wall. For some reason, Stefen need not wait for the lady to introduce herself.
“Virus’s creator,” he said.
“Yes.”
“What do you want? Go straight to the point.”
“You. You and your knowledge. In short, your alliance.”
“Why?”
“I wrote this program, also known to you as Virus, to change the world. What you have seen would really happen, unless we can do something about it, now. At first I infected only the rich, as they held the most power amongst everyone, but then I found out it’s real potential.”
“What can I do? I’m just a programmer, a researcher.”
“You are a virus researcher, quite rare. To combat a virus, you must first know how to write it. And that it all I need.”
“Why? You can write Virus. I have yet to find out how. You are more capable at doing it then I am. You don’t need me. And tell me, why didn’t I forget the dream?”
“You have a strong mind. And all I can do is to program the machine to show them what I want to show them. I’ve tried to show the pioneers of the cyber-world what would happen, but they just die. I cannot hack into the system. Are you helping or not?”
Stefen considered saying no, but he did not know what would happen if he did.
He was working late, but something great was going to happen. He just needed to complete the hack.
“Done?” she asked.
“Yes. Are you sure we should do this?” he quizzed.
“Yes. Are you ready or not?”
“Ready to destroy this wonderful world and send mankind to face troubles? Sure.” He uttered sarcastically.
“Does it delete all information about cyber-world?”
“Yes.”
“Do it.”
He pressed enter.

Life was so much better in the cyber-world. One command, just one, would make the world perfect. Snow
It is snowing. It is always snowing. But this is different. The difference could be felt, but it could not be translated into words. To do so was as difficult as describing what a colour is to a blind person. If you look up at the night sky, you will see a bright star shining. It is bright, far brighter than anything else in sight. The moon is big, but it glows in a strange yellowish manner. Nothing like what you’ve ever seen before. But no one could see the unique sky. The skies might be bright, but the Earth is dark. Shadows of the trees hides the entire earth as the snow continued to fall. Occasionally, the branches of the trees would not be able to withstand the forever increasing weight of the snow and would bend, causing the snow to slide off. It will fall for a long time, then finally land on the cold, bleak forest floor. Sometimes, it would land on the bush, and it will shake as if it was shivering. The snow must be cold.

Would such a scene be possible in the future?

Silence ain't golden
I didn't have any idea what i was writing about. i just felt the need to write it.

Yume
I had a dream once, a very beautiful dream. I had a time machine, and I decided to go back into the past and show one of my ancestors what the future was like. I went back into time and brought him to a town in 2008. I told him some things about 2008 and told him things to be scared of and things that he need not fear.
At night, I brought him out for dinner, showing him how food taste likes now. I didn’t eat much myself, for I was too busy observing his reactions. He ate them and, unlike what I expected, commented that it was not as tasty as the food was back at home. I was shocked. Why would a person from the past say that our food was not nice? They didn’t have much spices back then, they didn’t have much salt back then. Why? He merely commented that there was no hard work found in the food. That was so not true. I told him about how hard it was to earn money and how hard it was to afford such food. He smiled and said that something bought would never taste as good as something you planted yourself. I disagreed, but said nothing.
I brought him out onto the streets, showing him the wonderful street lamps we have that helped save so many people’s lives. He pointed to the sky. “There are no stars to guild us,” he said. Are people from the past so helpless? I wanted to prove to him that the present was so much better than the past.
I showed him how cars help us so much in our daily lives. “You cannot interact with the car like how we can with horses,” he said.
I shoke my head and showed him the television. He said, “what is the point of looking at what you cannot experience personally? Live is much better if you spend your time happily instead of looking at others arguing.” I sighed. He was hopeless. He smiled and politely said that he wanted to go home.
I brought him home, totally defeated by his many excuses. Just as I was about to leave him, he turned around and said, “let me show you how life should be.”
The next day, he wanted me to help him plant his crops. It was really hard work, but by the end of the day, things changed. Even though the rice was plain and tasteless, it seemed to me that it was the nicest thing on earth.
Then, at night, he showed me the stars. A sky full of stars, was nothing like what you could imagine. It was not tiny bulbs hanging in the sky, but thousands of different lights, each bearing a different meaning. I could not believe my eyes.
The next day, he showed me a horse. It looked plain to me, an ugly, dirty horse, but he proofed to me that it was not just a stupid animal, but a loyal horse. When it pulled the cart, I could see its whole body straining. It did not complain, it did not resist, and it did its best. He showed me how bad a horse can behave when badly taken care of. A car would be easier to use, for there was no need to take care of it like how you take care of the horse. But it was different. It was different.
Then, the day after that, he brought me to the forest. Helping me climb a tree, he explained to me how still I should be when I was waiting. We sat in the tree and waited. Mosquitoes and other inset buzzed around us, but I did not move, for I did not want him to think that people from the future were wimps. It was a long wait. Then suddenly, a bush rustled. I was so startled I wanted to scream, but he grabbed my hand and reminded me what he had just told me. I sat still. A doe with its fawn appeared. The way the fawn took care of the fawn and the way the fawn reacted was just so unimaginable. It was something no documentary on earth could ever capture. Perhaps it was because of the buzzing mosquitoes, perhaps it was the fast that there was hardly any such scenes left on earth in 2008 since so many forests were destroyed.
I woke up as another person.

The Extinction of the Peacemakers
tomorrow is my birthday, and i thought i'll write myself a piece. it is not really relevant, but it is the only thing that came to my mind.
“We are peacemakers, Shannon, we don’t fight,” spoke an elderly mouse.
“I don’t get it! We get chased out of our own home that we spent so much effort to build and we can’t do anything about it! What are we? Wimps that run away from battle?” spat the young mouse, probably too young to even know what was going on.
“We are not wimps. We are merely peacemakers. They must have their own reasons for chasing us out of our own home. You are blinded by rage, little mouse.”
“They think that we are dirty. They think that we make them sick. They think that we are… rats.”
“There is a misunderstanding here. And they often lead to unnecessary conflict and war.”
“I don’t care about misunderstanding and war. I say we stand and fight.”
“You still do not understand. We fought a war with the humans so long ago, and we lost so terribly that our species is almost wiped out. The humans probably don’t remember this, considering how bad their memory is, but I am sure they are unconsciously preparing for another battle with us. Instinct, I call it,” explained the elderly mouse, still patient with the tiny mouse.
“If you’re too scared to fight, so be it! I’ll go gather the mouse and fight. Just give me the permission. You won’t even realize that there is war going on.”
“
“I DON’T CARE! THIS IS THE ONLY WAY! I’M SICK OF RUNNING AROUND!”
The old mouse shook his head and waited for some report about a mouse recruiting warriors. No doubt. After about fifteen minutes, his butler marched in.
“Greybeard, Shannon is…”
“Say no more, I know what he is doing. You have my permission to stop any warrior from following him.”
“Greybeard… actually… I don’t think we can go on escaping. Perhaps it is time to counter attack. After all, nearly a quarter of our mice have been slain in the previous attack from the humans…”
“That is precisely why we are moving. We only have three quarters of the mice we had.”
“But Greybeard… our population is decreasing rapidly. We can’t go on like this…”
“FINE. DO WHAT YOU LIKE. YOU ALL JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND THE SITUATION WE ARE IN.”
Then after a few seconds of silence, after Greybeard cooled down, “Sorry, but I still don’t think it is the right thing to do. I don’t think I have the right to stop you all now. No matter what I do, you all won’t listen.”
Greybeard stood up from where he was lying and hobbled out of the chamber and the mouse burrow.
A week after Greybeard’s departure,
“
“Yes, indeed.”
He made his way to the speech chamber, where about ten thousand mice all over the world have gathered.
“Fellow mice from all over the world, I thank you for gathering here today. As you might have heard, Greybeard has left the mice community. It is terrible to lose such a talent mouse, but at the same time, I want all of you to understand that it is time for us to fight back.”
He paused a while, letting the roar from the crowd die down.
“I am sure you have enough torture from the humans. We will show them that we are not the one to bully. We will show them who the boss is! Now, I declare that A WAR WITH THE HUMANS HAS STARTED!”
There was more cheer from the crowd and
Somewhere in the crowd, an old mouse shook his head as he watched the mice march towards extinction.
A mouse lay limped, in the middle of the road. There was no blood, there was no broken bone, but the mouse did not move. His eyes that were shiny before just stared blankly before him. He did not blink. His legs were not bent; they hung lifelessly from his body. His tail was a bit squashed, caused by careless humans who stepped on it.
“Hey Lester! Look what I found!” a little girl called out to her brother.
“Ewww! That is disgusting! Leave it alone. It might be carrying some disease, you know,” her brother said.
“Yeah, rats are disgusting.”

An Old Wolf
Jake was chasing after a wolf. An old performing wolf with less than a year left in it. He was amazed when he found out that the wolf could run so fast. All its life it worked so hard in the circus, and finally it would close those tired, old eyes for the last time and get the rest he deserves. That old wolf was the only companion Jake ever had. When he heard that the circus master was going to get rid of the old pack of performing wolves, he was devastated and tried his best to persuade them to let him, at least, keep that old wolf. They agreed, but even so, Jake would not be able to spend more than a year with it. At least, he thought, at least it could get a decent life before its death.
However, a decent life with Jake was not what the old wolf sought. It wanted neither adventure nor peace. All it wanted was its mate, another wolf that would be brought to a zoo. The old wolf was traveling at a speed no animal of his age could, even faster than the speed he had ran when he was still young. It did not know where it was going, nor where its mate was, but it believe that as long as it kept running, it would, one day, meet its mate. Perhaps by chance, or perhaps by instinct, its legs brought it to a lorry, where a few zookeepers were transporting the pack
Jake reached, seconds later, panting.
“Where is the old she wolf?” he asked, barely able to catch his breath.
“Ah, that one! She was so problematic. Struggling so hard at that age. She is gone now, resting the old bones of hers. Must have used the last of her breath struggling.”
There was no sad howl when the old wolf left. It just left, with its head hanging. Without noticing it, Jake followed the old wolf. They stopped at the seaside, the wolf’s favorite hide out, where Jake sat down. It placed its head on his lap the way he usually do, and closed its ancient eyes. Jake was left alone with his tears and overpowering sense of loneliness as the old canine departed without a struggle, still in search for its mate.
A wolf was running, again. Its legs were running, and its fur was flying. With a youthful spirit and a strong heart, it believed that as long as it kept running, it would, someday, meet its mate. Quite unknown to it, it left someone, whose love for it was so great, suffering in silence.

Disappointed
“Where am I?” Jake muttered to himself as he sat up.
“Nowhere,” replied something that looked rather similar to a wolf, but stronger, and larger.
Its coat was blood red, and its fangs were larger and sharper than a normal fang. Its size was similar to that of a horse.
Instead of being frightened by the beast, Jake growled, “It doesn’t make sense at all.”
“It is not supposed to.”
“What are you?”
“Something.”
“That doesn’t make sense either.”
“Stop asking ridiculous answers, will you?”
“Then give me a proper answer!” Jake bellowed.
He felt irritated by the “something”.
“If you ask a proper question, I will give you a proper answer,” the beast seemed to be totally relaxed, and that irritated Jake.
They sat there in silence for a while, and then Jake began to understand the situation.
“I want to go home!” he began whimpering.
“Quiet.”
“I WANT TO GO HOME!”
The beast suddenly stood up and growled at the bush.
“Warfire, you are befriending a human again,” another beast, similar to Warfire, emerged from the bush.
This creature’s coat was pure white, without a single marking on it.
“Snowclaw!” hissed Warfire, “what do you want?”
“That human with you, is suppose to be an offering.”
“I don’t care. I am sick of it, offering after offering. Why don’t we just launch an attack on the other party? I don’t want to be bossed around anymore!”
“That will start a war! We are the Peacemakers! We are supposed to avoid war at all cost!”
“You are so naïve if you believe that good will actually win evil. That is in stories, stories! Fight poison with poison, good will never win evil. We are far stronger that those cat like creatures. We can win the war!”
“That is so not true!” growled Snowclaw.
Another creature, one slightly larger that Warfire, pounced out from the bush and pinned Jake to the ground.
“Offering,” it spoke.
Jake was sick of being so helpless around those creatures and being treating like nothing but a mere turkey, ready to be slaughtered and served as a meal.
“I AM NOT AN OFFERING!” he yelled.
For a moment, all the wolves’ eyes seemed to be fixed at something distant, and they spoke together.
“Not an offering…”
Jake was rather satisfied with himself when he felt energy being drained from him rapidly.
“Stop, stop STOP!” he pleaded in pain and desperation.
The feeling just stopped. The wolves returned to the way they were before he said that he was not an offering. A second later, all of them collapsed.
